I love Nick Roland. Nick, if you're reading this, thanks for disagreeing with me on that last post. It meant a lot to me. Well, here's what I've concluded from my last post: I needed to flesh out my ideas more--not so much my ideas as how I communicated them. I still believe firmly everything I said, but I gave a false impression of myself and my political views. So, here's a simplified list of what I believe politically.
1. I'm not a Rebulican. (I used to be.)
2. I'm not a Democrat.
3. Moral laws are a mediocre replacement for teaching people about Christ's love, so that they may come to know Christ--thus seeking and striving to live a morally sound, righteous life.
4. People get a better view of Christ through social action than through codes of morality, because serving people is about sacrifice and there's no greater love than sacrifice--that's why Christ was willing to sacrifice his life.
5. Capitalism is evil, because capitalism is about getting ahead and getting what's yours. It forces manipulation and fosters greed. "Money is the root of all evil." "It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven." Jesus said those words.
6. A Communist government would never work in a fallen world, because people are evil--greedy, prideful, and selfish.
7. Democracy is not necessarily better than other forms of government. I don't think Heaven will be a democracy. It will be a monarchy. Therefore, it's not worth fighting wars to spread democracy.
8. Bombing other countries is evil, especially when there's even a .001% chance of civilians (Average Joes like you and me but with darker skin and speaking a different language) getting hurt.
9. It is hypocritical to tell countries like North Korea not to possess nuclear weapons while we currently possess enough nuclear firepower to destroy the world. The best solution is to lead by example despite the fact the popular logic would say other wise---"We need our nukes to make sure they don't build nukes."
10. It is equally immoral to support abortion as it is to ignore the massive poverty situation in the world--AIDS, diseases from poor water supplies, starvation, etc. Children are dying from abortion, but even more are dying from starvation.
11. America is not better than other countries--just greedier.
12. Fair Trade Laws need to be established, because we are basically committing theft and murder. We're basically stealing things like cotton and coffee from other countries. We're basically murdering the people that we force into starvation because of this.
13. Gay Marriage is not the biggest issue on the ballot despite what Fox News and your pastor told you. If Candidate #1 supports a gay marriage ban strongly but fails in every other category, he should not get your vote (unless Candidate #2 also fails in everything).
14. Welfare is a good thing. Medicare is a good thing. It doesn't matter if they're being abused. Don't tell me that Welfare steals your chance to give to charity on your own. If people were giving enough to help the cause of the poor, we wouldn't have had to start Welfare in the first place. Also, Medicare is good, because people deserve good medical care.
15. Social Security is a scam. There's not really a biblical backing for this. I just wanted to throw it in to remind everyone from our generation that we're going to get screwed when our parents retire, because their generation (the Baby Boomers) is twice the size of ours. The tax will have to increase from 14% to a predicted 30% or more. We won't see a dime back of our Social Security "investment", because the Social Security system will collapse before our retirement. Greenspan even reccommended to get rid of the program--but no self-respecting Senator will back that up...unless he doesn't care about getting voted back in. So, think of your Social Security withdrawals on your pay stub as charity towards taking care of your parents after retirment.
15. As Christians, politics comes second to Jesus.
16. We shouldn't just let the government take care of social issues. We should be giving to charities and missions organizations. We should support things like the One Campaign and Oxfam/Make Trade Fair for how they influence government, but we should also help out things like Blood:Water Mission and Word Made Flesh for how they directly help the poor and show Christ's love. Also, we should go help--even if it's short-term.
17. The Kingdom of Heaven will have a way better government than America.

After walking away from your responce and thinking about it, a huge point you made really sunk in. The attempt to enforce morality is nearly an attempt to remove the need for Christ. We as Christians are not supposed to be a moral code for the world, but rather an example of Christ's love. We are free from the law. I think I'm beginning to see your point of view better, and in turn agree with you a lot more. I'm still learning.
I like welfare, but wouldn't it be cool if the church served their purpose and used their excess of money to give people what they need rather than arguing over how the government should do it? That'd be cool, and Jesus glorifying I think.
